The more colorful debate took place in Louisiana last night. Toward the end, Sen. David Vitter (R) was asked about charges that he hired a private investigator to dig up dirt on his rival. Things devolved from there, with Vitter accusing his opponent in the governor’s runoff, John Bel Edwards (D), of acting “holier than thou.” The Democrat returned fire, saying: “You’re a liar and you’re a cheater.”
In another exchange, “Vitter accused Edwards of trying to pad his pockets by voting for a legislative pay raise … ‘What real sacrifice will you ask of political insiders?’ Vitter asked Edwards. ‘Sen. Vitter, you’ve been lying sideways in the public trough since 1992,’ Edwards replied. ‘You make more per month (in the Senate) that I make in a year.’ Vitter tied Edwards to President Obama, while Edwards linked the senator to Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), even though the two men dislike each other.” Read the Times-Picayune story here. And the News-Star’s here.
