Three Republican presidential contenders Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, and Bobby Jindal have all committed to attending a conference in Iowa this weekend hosted by Kevin Swanson, a far-right pastor who supports the death penalty for LGBT people.1
Swanson, the main organizer of the so-called ‘National Religious Liberties Conference,’ has defended capital punishment for homosexuality as “Biblical law.” He’s also said that Girl Scout cookies and the movie “Frozen” will turn little girls into lesbians, and that natural disasters can be blamed on women who wear pants.2
And Swanson’s not the only one -- multiple speakers at this event have defended the death penalty for gay people.
We already knew that the Republican Party opposed LGBT rights and gender equality. But this takes things to a new level.
And just when we thought this story couldn’t get any more outrageous, PFAW’s Right Wing Watch, which has monitored Swanson and his far-right allies for years, reported just last week that Cruz, Huckabee, and Jindal will be joined this weekend by a second pastor who has supported putting gay people to death.3
Shouldn’t all of this be too extreme for our nation’s highest office? Apparently the GOP doesn’t think so.
