TODAY'S TALKING POINTS
A young man was shot in Ferguson on the one year anniversary of Michael Brown’s death. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said in a press conference that two groups exchanged gunfire at a protest for 18-year-old Brown, who was shot and killed by a white police officer a year ago, setting off a national firestorm of debate and demonstration. A man in his 20s opened fire on plainclothes police before he was hit with a bullet from an officer that left him in critical condition. Law enforcement officials stressed that he was not part of the protests. The officers involved in the shooting were reportedly placed on administrative leave.
Donald Trump defied GOP critics. Trump defended himself in a rapid-fire series of interviews on Sunday morning news programs, saying he was unfairly singled out for tough questions during last Thursday’s GOP debate, and threatening to challenge the GOP as a third-party candidate. He’s been under fire for attacking Fox News host and debate moderator Megyn Kelly, saying she had “blood coming out of her wherever” during the debate. He insisted that it wasn’t a sexist reference to menstruation, but the remark cost him a speaking slot at an important gathering of conservatives in Atlanta. Do us a favor: ignore him for a minute and watch Carly Fiorina’s awesome response.
Turkey's U.S. consulate was targeted amid widespread attacks. Two people opened fire on the U.S. consulate in Istanbul Monday as waves of violence killed at least eight people in other spots around Turkey. While no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, the strikes come as the country steps up to play a larger role in defeating the Islamic State group, and tension between the Turkish government and Kurdish militants is on the rise.
