TODAY'S TALKING POINTS
The EU has a plan to distribute refugees — and not everyone is happy. European Union leaders agreed to split up 120,000 refugees among different countries based on a majority vote. Because the decision wasn’t unanimous, it means the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania could be forced to accept people against their willUnder the agreement,15,600 refugees from Italy and 50,400 from Greece would be moved to other European countries, as well as an additional 54,000 at a later date.
The GOP tried and failed to end late-term abortions. Senate Democrats successfully blocked a Republican bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks. The abortion debate, driven by disturbing videos leaked earlier this summer, is heating up on The Hill (even though research shows that Americans’ opinions on abortion almost never change). It doesn’t look like the GOP will back down anytime soon, but lawmakers are running out of time to reach a compromise as a government shutdown looms.
The Volkswagen scandal got a whole lot worse. After the Environmental Protection Agency ordered the carmaker to recall 500,000 cars, the company admitted that the problem was a little bit larger — like 11 million larger. Cue the lawsuits from people who thought they were buying "green" cars, and instead bought a model that contributed to an absurd amount of pollution.
  • Here’s how to find out if your car made the recall list for cheating on emissions.
Daraprim's price will drop after spiking 5,000%. Ex-hedge funder Martin Shkreli agreed to lower the price of the life-saving AIDS drug that he had raised from $13.50 to $750 per pill.
The U.S. is hosting some big-name dignitaries. The pope arrived in Washington yesterday and will visit the White House today for an enormous welcoming ceremony and a chat in the Oval Office. Meanwhile, on the other coast, Chinese President Xi Jinping is talking tech with U.S. executives. He made waves last night claiming that China wants to work with the U.S. to combat cybercrime.
New York Yankees legend Yogi Berra died. The Hall of Fame catcher was 90 years old.
