During a speech at American University earlier this week, President Obama railed against Republican opponents of the Iran deal and said, “It’s those hardliners chanting ‘Death to America’ who have been most opposed to the deal. They are making a common cause with the Republican caucus.”
In a clip of an upcoming interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, the president stood by that comment, saying, “What I said is absolutely true, factually.”
He said it’s certainly the case that within Iran, the people most opposed to the deal are “hardliners who are implacably opposed to any cooperation with the international community.”
And the fact that Republicans, Obama said, opposed the deal before they even read it is “reflective of an ideological commitment not to get a deal done, and in that sense they do have a lot in common with hardliners who are much more satisfied with the status quo.”
