Fully half of American voters say they would be embarrassed to have Trump as president, according to a Quinnipiac poll of national registered voters that was released at 6 a.m. But The Donald still leads the GOP field with 28 percent of respondents’ support compared to 24 percent for Cruz. Rubio trails with 12 percent compared to 10 percent for Carson, with no other candidate breaking 6 percent. The findings are dangerous for Republicans as Trump lags in general election head-to-head matchups: Hillary beats him by 7 points, 47 to 40 percent; and Bernie crushes him by 13 points, 51 to 38 percent. Clinton and Cruz are tied in a hypothetical matchup, and Cruz is virtually tied in a matchup with Sanders. A head-to-head with Cruz and Sanders also showed a deadlock, as does one between Rubio and Clinton. Voters believe Clinton has a good chance of winning in November, 59 percent to 32 percent, while voters don’t think Trump can win by a 12-point margin (53-41). See the full results here.
