Yesterday, U.S. Representatives Donna Edwards (D-MD), Ted Deutch (D-FL), Keith Ellison (D-MN), James P. McGovern (D-MA), and John Yarmuth (D-KY) circulated a letter urging their colleagues to join them in signing theDeclaration for Democracy.
The Declaration reads: “I, _________, declare my support for amending the Constitution of the United States to restore the rights of the American people, undermined by Citizens United and related cases, to protect the integrity of our elections and limit the corrosive influence of money in our democratic process.”
People For the American Way is working with allies in Congress and across the country to get more public officials signed on to the Declaration of Democracy. We’re also working with many of the same partners to urge President Obama to address the urgency of undoing the harm of overturning Citizens United v. FEC, by constitutional amendment, in his upcoming State of the Union Address on Tuesday.
President Obama has been using his bully pulpit effectively in recent weeks in advocacy of immigration reform, gun safety and fiscal policy. We need to do all we can to make sure he’s also making the case to the American people that unlimited corporate influence in elections is a threat to our democracy that must be addressed now.
And, we need Congress to act...
