“Today, in communities across the country, we honor the courage and sacrifice of the many brave servicemen and women who have given so much to their country and fought to ensure that America continues to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities that make our nation great. We owe each and every one of America’s veterans our eternal gratitude for their bravery and dedication.
“On this day of reflection, we must also recommit ourselves to the critical work of providing for the needs of all of America’s service members – whether they are still serving our country or have returned to civilian life. Under the President’s leadership, we have made important progress for our veterans and military families: providing improved medical care for the wounded and enhanced mental health services, tackling the issue of homelessness among our veterans, repealing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy so that all Americans can serve their country openly, and implementing the Post-9/11 GI Bill to ensure that 300,000 veterans and family members have the support they need to earn a college degree. And the President has followed through on his commitment to bring our service members home from Iraq.
“But our work is far from over. President Obama is fighting to get Congress to pass the American Jobs Act, which offers tax credits to businesses that hire veterans, and he has taken action at the executive level to help our nation’s veterans find work now. America’s service members have offered their lives to protect our country, and they deserve our full support. To all of our nation’s veterans, we salute you, we thank you for your service, and we will continue to stand with you now and in the future.”
