A shooter at an Oregon college killed 10 people. The gunman, 26-year-oldChris Harper Mercer, opened fire on Umpqua Community College’s campus in Roseburg, injuring at least seven others before he was killed by police. Mercer reportedly told Christian students to stand up before saying "Good, because you're a Christian, you're going to see God in just about one second."

This school shooting is the 142nd since the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre and the 45th this year alone.  While Twitter users showed just how fed up Americans are with gun violence, a visibly frustrated President Barack Obama called for political action. "Our thoughts and prayers are not enough," he said. "It's not enough." Here's where the 2016 presidential candidates stand on gun control.

The Senate unveiled historic criminal justice reform. Lawmakers are calling the proposed bill "the biggest crime justice reform in a generation." The bill reduces some mandatory minimum sentences and increases others. If it passes, the bill could have a revolutionary impact, since many of the affected sentences have contributed to sky-high prison populations.

The Obama administration introduced new restrictions to limit smog-causing ozone emissions. Ozone emissions, the by-product of power plants and car tailpipes, have been proven to cause respiratory illnesses. The administration's new rules would restrict ozone production to 70 parts per billion (lower than the current 75) — but not everyone's happy about the plan. Environmentalists complained that the limits should have been stricter, while manufacturers said the new rule will “inflict pain on companies that build things in America."

Hurricane Joaquin is showing no signs of slowing down. The storm is ready to rock the East Coast of the United States like the Category 4 hurricane it is. New Jersey has already declared a state of emergency. The Internet, of course, is preparing by making the most hilarious memes.
