THE LAST WORD 10-22-15

THE LAST WORD
When Stanford University junior Elisabeth Dee walks around the famed school’s bucolic campus, she carries a knife, whistle and stun gun. The reason? Dee is a survivor of sexual assault — and she’s outraged about the school’s recent campus climate survey. This week, she told Mic’s Jake Horowitz that the survey found 1.9% of undergraduate and graduate students have been sexually assaulted on campus, while a recent survey by the Association of American Universities found that the number of undergraduate women sexually assaulted on college campuses is 23.1%. The AAU used a broader definition of sexual assault and intentionally focused on female undergrads — the people who are disproportionately affected by sexual assault. Dee is lobbying for the school that birthed some of our favorite tech giants to do better when it comes to addressing this problem.
