Sixteen years ago, a serendipitous thing happened to a group of researchers who had been tracking 1,420 low income children in North Carolina. The children were members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and, thanks to a new casino, their household’s incomes rose by nearly 20 percent practically overnight. The lucky researchers were able to witness the remarkable things that happen to poor kids when you give their parents a little bit of money. |
