By last month, a record 107,500 people — mostly Syrians and Afghans — had risked their lives to enter the European Union, mostly Greece and Turkey. Many of them didn’t make it. Despite the staggering numbers of migrant deaths, the grave human toll of the crisis didn’t seem to set in until this photo surfaced of a Syrian boy washed ashore after fleeing his home.
