THE LAST WORD |
“Mic’s Tom McKay here. On Wednesday, Ahmed Mohamed was detained — and it wasn't a random incident, or an isolated act of racism. Officials in Irving, Texas, especially Mayor Beth Van Duyne, have been setting the stage for an ugly incident like this for quite some time. I wanted to give readers the context to understand how Islamophobia weasels its way into official institutions and has a real (and awful) impact on people who deserve equal treatment under the law. If people care about Mohamed and others like him, they need to challenge Islamophobia both among their elected officials and their fellow citizens.” |
