France probes train terror attack. Ayoub El-Khazzani, the armed gunman who was brought down on a train from Amsterdam to Paris by three Americans, told a lawyer after being arrested that his plan was only to rob passengers, but he watched a jihadi video right before the attack. He has been charged with attempted murder, attempted mass murder and membership in a terrorist organization.
First lawsuits filed in Ashley Madison hack. At least four lawsuits have been filed within the United States, all of which seek class-action status and say that reasonable penalties would exceed $5 million.
James Holmes could get one of the longest sentences in history. After the emotional testimony of more than 100 victims of the 2012 Colorado theater shooting, a judge will sentence Holmes to life in prison without parole and up to 3,318 additional years on attempted murder convictions.
South Sudan's president may sign a peace deal. The agreement would endan 18-month civil war that has left nearly two million people homeless, but President Salva Kiir has some "reservations." The U.N. Security Council has threatened (paywall) to take "immediate action" if he refuses to sign it.
Tropical Storm Erika formed over the Atlantic. It’s officially hurricane season, and emerging storms are making sure everyone knows it. Erika is expected to spin into an intimidating Category 1 hurricane near the Bahamas by the weekend.
