TODAY'S TALKING POINTS
Three Americans received the highest honor in France. Two U.S. service members, their civilian friend and a British IT consultant were awarded the Légion d’honneur for thwarting a gunman on a Parisian train who attempted to open fire on passengers during a Friday trip from Amsterdam to Paris. “It was either do something or die,” said Anthony Sadler alongside his friends Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone and National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos at a press conference on Sunday.
  • The suspected gunman, identified as Ayoub El-Khazzani, injured three people in the attack. Investigators think he may have been motivated by extremism, but a lawyer who interviewed him after the attack said that his only motive was robbery.
North and South Korea met for talks in “truce village.” As South Korea blasts anti-Pyongyang propaganda through loudspeakers on the border and the North threatens military escalation, both countries agreed to see if they could cool the tension through peace talks. The lengthy talks continued into late Monday local time as North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un stepped up mobilization of his forces and Seoul officials demanded a formal apology for land mines that injured two soldiers.
A devastating crash at a U.K. airshow killed at least 11 and injured 14. In one of the worst-ever airshow disasters in the U.K., a Cold-war era Hawker Hunter jet failed to complete a loop during the Shoreham Air Show and plummeted into the road below.
Vice President Joe Biden met with Sen. Elizabeth Warren. The two reportedly discussed economic policy and not Biden's future, but it fueled speculation that the VP might be considering dropping the first word in his current title.
Usain Bolt edged out Justin Gatlin for the 100-meter title. Bolt's win secured his standing as the world's fastest man at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing on Sunday.
