THE LAST WORD 08-21-15

THE LAST WORD
Erik Kramer, who played for four NFL teams over his 10-year career, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday night after an apparent suicide attempt. His ex-wife said he had been suffering from depression caused by brain injuries inflicted during his football days. While it may seem shocking, this is nothing new. Studies have linked the violence in football to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative disease of the brain caused by trauma. According to ESPN, the disease has been found in 87 of 91 dead NFL players who were examined — several of them died by suicide. The NFL has a history of denying a link between the game, CTE and the depression and suicidal acts that can result, slowing the progress for any new safety measures. But until we find a solution, those epic Super Bowl tackles will seem a lot more wince-worthy
