Retired U.S. Generals Reject GOP’s Call For War, Suppot #IranDeal

No other President in history has faced such a relentless barrage of blind attacks and vitriol from the opposition quite like President Obama. Call it Obama Derangement Syndrome or Baracknaphobia, but the fact of the matter is that President Obama has taken their crap from day one. Regarding the nuclear deal with Iran, a fusillade of predictable Republican rabble-rousing emanated from every corridor of Obama Derangement Syndrome centers.
But the president is not about to let these haters derail an issue that has plagued his foreign policy team since the start of his presidency–and neither are a group of retired war generals.
Indeed, President Obama’s nuclear agreement just got a major vote of confidence from three dozen retired generals and admirals–all of whom vigorously got behind the historic rapprochement. Regarding the deal, the generals wrote that it’s “the most effective means currently available to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.” More telling, however, was the generals belief that this diplomatic option “must be given time to work” before any military action should be considered.
“There is no better option to prevent an Iranian nuclear weapon,” the letter said. “Military action would be less effective than the deal, assuming it is fully implemented. If the Iranians cheat, our advanced technology, intelligence and the inspections will reveal it, and U.S. military options remain on the table.”
“And if the deal is rejected by America,” it said, “the Iranians could have a nuclear weapon within a year. The choice is that stark.”(Daily Kos)
I don’t know about you, but I tend to value the opinion of men who actually served in combat and understand the devastation of war. You know, as opposed to a bunch of fanatical war-hawks who want to make democracy safer for their defense portfolios. Combine the support of retired generals with that of a group of international scientists, and the Obama Administration appears to be on the right track to getting the leverage it needs in dealing with Iran.
