Pope Francis took a provocative stance on global climate change Thursday, releasing an encyclical — a teaching letter addressed to Catholic bishops — that not only affirmed the reality of man-made warming but also issued a moral call for changes in lifestyle, consumption and policy to stave off environmental disaster. That put Republican lawmakers in the United States, many of whom deny that human activity has contributed to the warming of the earth, in an awkward position. |
