Voting in Referendum 2015 has ceased after Ireland went to the polls in droves. Around 3.2 million people were entitled to vote on marriage equality and on lowering the age of qualification to stand for election as president from 35 to 21 thousands of Irish citizens have gone to extraordinary lengths to get home to vote. In fact, the#HomeToVote hashtag is trending worldwide and flat-out winning the internet today:
According to a Twitter spokeswoman, 72,000 tweets with the #HomeToVote hashtag were posted on the social media site in just 24 hours, "a significant volume of tweets from an Irish perspective".
Judging by the hashtag's popularity and the photos being tweeted, Ireland seems ready for equality
