TODAY'S TALKING POINTS
The U.S. launched an airstrike targeting "Jihadi John." The Islamic State group militant known for his British accent and his appearances in Western hostage beheading videos is actually named Mohammed Emwazi — and U.S. forces said there's a "high degree of certainty he was hit." But early this morning, British Prime Minister David Cameron said officials are "not yet certain" he was killed.
  • Meanwhile, the Islamic State group reportedly released a new videothreatening an attack on Russia, but its authenticity has yet to be verified.
You can feed Syrian refugee children with one click in a new app. The migrant crisis is massive, but the World Food Program rolled out a tangible solution to one of the many issues refugees are facing. ShareTheMeal allows iPhone and Android users to give just 50 cents to provide a child with a day's worth of food. They’re hoping app users around the world can help fund a year of school meals for 20,000 Syrian children in Jordan's refugee camps.
The Million Student March rallied for free tuition and no student debt. College grads are leaving school with an average of $35,000 in student debt — and this year’s graduating class has the most student loan debt in history. It’s not an awesome way to boldly embark on the future, so students onmore than 100 campuses staged a protest Thursday, hoping that the higher-ups in Washington would hear them out and make some major changes.
A Utah judge ordered that a lesbian couple’s baby be given to a heterosexual couple. Child and Family Services had already deemed April Hoagland and Beckie Peirce fit parents, but that didn’t stop Judge Scott Johansen from arguing that kids are better off with heterosexual parents. The thing is, research shows the opposite. Now everyone from Hillary Clinton to the Human Rights Campaign is rallying in support of the couple’s rights.
U.S. obesity rates are still swelling. The green juice and kale chip trends aren’t working. Neither are the years of public awareness campaigns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report that shows 38% of adults are obese, versus 32% just a decade earlier — and experts have no idea why this is happening. (One theory is that whole “everything in moderation” thing is actually pretty bad for you.)
