Doctors had given 1-year-old Layla just weeks to live after trying and failing to treat her aggressive leukemia with conventional methods. But doctors at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London tried one last thing: Gene editing — and it may have successfully cured Layla’s cancer. While gene editing isn’t necessarily a sweeping cure for cancer, it could be one of the largest medical breakthroughs in decades.
