THE LAST WORD
There’s a deadly war brewing in El Salvador, and nobody seems to be talking about it. The levels of gang violence in the country have hit highs not seen since their civil war more than two decades ago. The New York Times reports that in June alone, 677 people were killed by gangs. The government has tried and failed to crack down on their reign of terror, but the country’s broken economy means that job creation doesn't provide a way out of gang life for everyone. In the midst of the chaos, one mayor is using his small budget and international aid to create a climate where fewer people are killing to survive on his turf.
